Basically two things:
- Digital control over matter - establishing and maintaining machine phase – Note that 3D-printing is NOT digital control over matter!
- Emulation of complex (mechanical) properties from simple base materials:

The former is a critical basis for making technology as robust as life eventually.
The latter makes the technology much easier to achieve and access.
