According to the definition in the book Nanosystems "mechanosynthesis" does not require presence of applied forces.
It just does require motion of AP building blocks along controlled paths (i.e. motions being in machine phase).
Generalizing machine phase a bit
- "positional machine phase" Motion corridor subatomic width or at least at the source and target of the motion such or at least narrow enough that self centering structures at the end of motions reestablish atomic precision with out needing thermally driven local self assembly.
- "topological machine phase": Wider motion corridor. Wide enough that thermally driven local self assembly becomes a viable option.
