A zero sum Situation can be stable. Nature where in that state before the emergence of humans. More narrowly rain-forests are in that state. But while nature is beautiful nature can also be cruel. Its pretty much "fist law" / "club law". In the English language there's even the term "law of the jungle" because it's a good example. So even if stable we should probably want to avoid it like hell.
Whether artificial highly advanced atomically precise technology will ever run in such a situation or not is probably not predictable from current knowledge.
Its said that a zero sum society is a society of takers rather than makers and thus a catastrophe and recipe for disaster. Template:Todo: find video where this idea is presented. In light of the example of nature where evolution is still happening (sort of making) this may be judged a bit differently.
