Gemstone like compounds have at best cubic symmetry better almost spherical isotropy (direction independence of mechanical and other properties) needs to be emulated by gemstone based metamaterials.
Many gemstone like compounds like e.g. trigonal α-silicon-nitride have low symmetry. This makes designing with them harder - automation of design can help.
