Neutral atom matter wave microscopy
(wiki-TODO: Add relevant papers on state of the art and challenges for improvement)
In particular neutral helium matter wave microscopy.
There is already a scanning variant in use (linked wikipedia page below) but this page is about imaging the whole area at once.
Underwhelming resolution limit far from theoretical limit as of today (2026)
Achievable resolution is still extremely limited compared to the theoretical limit given by the matter waves wavelength.
To confirm: barely better than optical microscopy in resolution still, and thus not in real use.
Showstoppers; Can APM help?
What stops achivement of theoretical resolution limits?
- Precision of manufacturable Fresnel zone plates. That would be amenable to improvement by APM.
- Other aspects that are harderless obvious to find improvements for (possible yvia APM. (wiki-TODO: Dig them up again and list them here.)
PROs & CONs
- PRO This technique would have the advantage of extremely high resolution while being extremely gentle to the surface.
- PRO/CON (context dependent) This technique would provide only surface information with no penetration depth as the low enegr yhelium atoms are repuldes by pauli repulsion from the surface.
Suspicions to confirm/(refute)
Even with helium atom gas matter wave behaving as a collective
and the de Broglie matter wavelength being a lot smaller than the helium atoms
The helium matter wave won't penetrate trough gaps well smaller than a helium atom but well bigger than the neutral helium matter wavelength
Well, not penetrating beyond an extremely damped evenaescent tunneling wave that practically is not relevant.
No matter how small the matter wavelength (via picked sharp monochromatic kinetic energy)
the resolution will always remain limited to a folding of the sphere of the neutral helium atom with the surface atoms.
