Water scarcity is one of the major civilization problems of our time (time of writing 2025).
Atomically precise manufacturing and technology (gem-gum-tech) could potentially completely neutralize this civilization problem.

There are three aspects:

  • desalination facilities
  • energy for the desalination
  • transport of the water to where it is needed (often far inland)

Desalination

There are several ways to do this.

Most primitive one being boiling and re-condensing.
Even this one could be hugely improved upon by
using high efficiency thermal recuperation (both ways).

A major one being high pressure reverse osmosis.
APM will be good at making optimal fractal shape filters with optimal size and shape pores
while providing more than enough mechanical stability to deal with high pressure.

More advanced even: Binding the salt ions and releasing them in a controlled
highly energetically reversible fashion using electromechanochemistry.

Since this is water centric technology integration of
non-diamondoid foladamer based nanotechnologies (eventually beyond natures proteins)
into a gem-based matrix may yield the highest efficiencies.

APM will allow to improve on these individually and
combine the best of these in fancy ways.

Basically underdroiund piplines or more fancy "water tubemeail" where
water is packaged to reduce the already low flow friction even further.
Transport could easily reach far inland all the way to the centers of continents.
Transport meshes could grow dense decentralized or even distributed and with that

  • extremely high capacity
    (rivaling (and even exceeding) the amount of water evaporated and in-air-transported by natural weather systems)
  • highly damage resilient to natural catastrophes and intentional malicious attack.

Gem based APM will largely improve on
Underground working and Underground transport and habitation.
Making building and maintaining the infrastructure for
safe resilient large capacity underground long range transport possible.
