Crystolecular base metamaterials may be mobile and deforming (like e.g. shearing in infinitesimal bearing metamaterials and muscle motor meteamaterials) requiring alignment to registry and locking into machine phase before disassembly (of assembly).
2D pixels making any sort of color with just 3 colors form a nice analogy to
3D voxels forming any sort of mechanical (and other) material properties
by usage of just a handful of high performance base materials.
Out of abundantly available chemical elements.
(wiki-TODO: Extend on the text here.)
Metamaterial examples
- Infinitesimal bearings
- Motor muscles
- Emulated elasticity but more specialized and higher performance than general purpouse utility fog or clatronics which are supposed to use active microscale micro-bots not nano-bots(!). Many metamaterials would already be homogeneous at the microscale and only granular further down at the nanoscale.
- Energy conversion metamaterials (e.g. Chemomechanical energy conversion -- zipping covalent bonds open and closed)
- Energy storage metamaterials (incuding entopic ones that cool down when damaged rather than burn and or explode
Concrete random examples
"Transparent alumynum" (not necessarily even containing aluminium thus the y)
A glass substitute that does not shatter under any circumstances, but behaves more like metal and beyond.
It springs back or (to large degree still reversibly) plastically deforms. Extremely blast and hit resistant. Never flying shards.
It also does not scratch or melt like any sort of transparent plastic of today (like e.g. acryl glas aka PPMA polymer).
A bit like what one might intuit with Star Trecks famous "transparent aluminum". Juts that it is a gemstone based mechanical metamaterial.
Possibly including aluminum oxides (leukosapphire, deltalumide, …).
Adjustable transparency solar cell functionality could be included once designed basically for free.
There might likely be license fees for the newest proptrietry side tech.
"Hyperthermoinsulatium"
A material that has extraordinary good thermal insulation properties.
Hugely reducing energy expenses for heating for housing.
And a variant that can be switched to be an excellent heat conductor basically instantly in ans shapes of patches.
Incredible for future cloth. Life saving in many cases. Heck even heat pump functionality could be included.
Also an enabler for various kinds of space exploration and eventual colonization.
