A gem-gum factory pixel would be the smalles sub-unit of such a system that can operate as an independent general manufacturing systems. Thus also including selfeplicative capabilities.
Some systems may be deisgned to so they can easily and quickly be broken apart into several smaller sub-systems. Other system designs may have become optimized to such a degree that smaller subunits would need a major redesign. Unlike well seperated pixels there being shared fuctionality overlap.
Quite small ones (thumbnail size) may be desirable for extremely robust disaster recovery. See: Disaster proof. And off grid survival tools. Se: Desert scenario
Minimal sized units capable of making copies of themselve may be even smaller than thumbnail sizes, but this gets increasingly impractical as these systems will get increasingly inefficient and complex. See pages: Replication backpack overhead & Molecular assemblers as advanced productive nanosystem (outdated).
This is about the minimum fraction of a gem-gum factory.
A fraction of a size that is sufficient for it to be able to do a full self replication.
Most likely quite deeply in the macroscopic range.
In mature gem-gum factory systems they could possibly have the size of a human thumb nail or even bigger.
For special gem-gum factories that are specialized as
"after global disaster civilization re-spawning safe-points" (see disaster proof)
it would be useful for such pixels to not be much bigger than a thumbnail though.
For the case of attempting bootstrapping among the direct path
See instead page: Early diamondoid nanosystem pixel (direct path)
While these will be much smaller they'll still be much bigger than molecular assemblers.
Micron scale systems? Hard to tell as of yet.
pixels per factory & fractional pixels
A whole gem-gum factory may be:
- (1) several full pixels joined together in seamless way or
- (2) just one pixel or
- (3) a fraction of a pixel - which can suffice if the products to be made don't need all the components that would be needed in a self replication process.
Case (3) hypothetical sub cases:
- (3a) given the right data from an external data-storage it can still make the molecular mill assembly lines needed to become a full pixel.
- (3b) the molecular mill assembly lines that are present within the pixel are not capable to create the molecular mill assembly lines that are necessary to reach full pixel status. No matter which data is fed. But the necessary assembly lines for upgrading to a full pixel can still be imported by connecting it to a global microcomponent distribution system.
