The term '''gem gum personal fabricator''' or ''gem gum PF'' for short could be used as an analogy to the personal computer to highlight its societal aspects.

The term '''"personal"''' that seemingly contradicts the term "factory" can be added to highlight the societal aspect of these devices.

Using the term "fabricator" instead of "factory" removes that seeming contradiction and should thus probably be avoided.

This article defines a novel term (that is hopefully sensibly chosen). The term is introduced to make a concept more concrete and understand its interrelationship with other topics related to atomically precise manufacturing. For details go to the page: Neologism.

This article is a stub. It needs to be expanded.

Atomically precise small scale factories or gem gum (pocket/desktop) factories for short are the main topic of this wiki.
For a more general overview please go to the main page.
For a more technical overview about gem gum factories check out: Design of advanced nanofactories.

A personal desktop gem-gum factory fabblet with dynamically deployed protective hood.

The personal gem gum factory is:

  • Your personal device that can push out virtually every thing* of your daily use.
(* at least every inedible thing)

The personal gem gum factory makes:

  • Your products that are as cheap as the abundant mining-free raw materials that it processes.
  • Your products that are far superior to today's best and ridiculously expensive high tech products.
  • Your products potentially in an environmentally friendly effluent free way
(also advanced recycling is faster than producing from scratch)

Self replication

Beside uesful products a personal fabricator can quickly produce copies of itself and that without any special raw materials thus you can make copies for all of your friends and they can make copies for all of their friends. Since everyone is linked to every other person on earth through a low number of acquaintanceships (wikipedia: six degrees of separation) you can imagine how fast this can spread.

Terminology

Note: the term "gem gum (pocket/desktop) factory" is novelly introduced here in the hope that it avoids the shortcomings of other existing terms that are currently in use.

  • Unlike the term "nanofactory" the term "gem gum factory" is able to sufficiently characterize what constitutes the device and its products by giving an example . That is it doesn't use the generic "nano" label and is thus harder to be devoided of its meaning by massive off-topic use.
  • The term is short enough to stay unabbreviated and so doesn't loose its meaning that way.
  • The seeming contradiction between "gem" and "gum" hopefully spawns some interest.
  • The term its rather catchy with the one letter change from gem to gum.

The term "personal" that seemingly contradicts the term "factory" can be added to highlight the societal aspect of these devices. Using the term "fabricator" instead of "factory" removes that seeming contradiction and should thus probably be avoided.
