Moieties are the smallest building blocks handeded in advanced mechanosynthesis of thechnology level III and II. When simple resource molecules are gobbled up one always ends up with a few atoms on the tooltip at first.

Except for hydrogen (and later maybe oxygen) in most cases one does not put down a single atom but a small (always bond) molecule (a moiety) with some bonds hydrogen capped and at least one open.
